The ATO has a mature design capability which they apply to all change in the Tax and Super system. This presentation outlines the core principles and concepts behind their approach designing change. It is a practical and proven method which helps them co-design changes with the community.

Design in the Tax Office is about making changes which best meet the needs of the community and the organisation. Their design work aims to provide good outcomes for people impacted by change, and good outcomes for their administration in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and the integrity of the tax and super systems. Design for them is about finding optimum solutions informed by an understanding of their user’s needs. It is about co-designing products, services and processes with them within the boundaries of what is possible and sensible. It is a practical strategy to make the community’s tax and super systems the best they can be.
